Measurements for Essential Oils

The number of actual drops can vary greatly and is especially dependent on the viscosity (thickness) of the oil and the dropper or orifice reducer used.

20 drops ….. 1 ml

75 drops ….. 1 teaspoon

You probably won’t get the same result twice.

Drops are so inaccurate in terms of weight that you can weigh the same number of drops from the same bottle of essential oil several times and you are likely to get a different result.

Measurements will also vary between suppliers.

Essential oils will vary by batch, by supplier, by geographical region, by plant origin, by growing conditions. In other words, you can buy three different batches of essential oil from three different suppliers and it’s likely that 20 drops of all three essential oils will weigh different to each other.

Human Error

The opportunity for human error is enormous. You can easily get distracted by something happening around you and you can lose count. You don’t have equipment measuring the drops for you, so you rely on your own ability to count to 20.

Furthermore, the viscosity of the essential oil can cause error in counting too. If the liquid has a low viscosity and drops out of the bottle quickly then you might not be able to keep up. If the liquid has a high viscosity and takes forever to drop out of the bottle, then you might become so bored that you get distracted and lose count.

Safety Precautions

Because essential oils are concentrated, highly potent substances, a working knowledge of how to use them safely is vital to the success of your efforts. The potential hazards of an essential oil depend on the compounds in the oil, the dosage and frequency used, and the method of application. Here are a few guidelines to ensure safe and effective use of essential oils:

  • Don’t use undiluted essential oils on the skin. They can cause burning, skin irritation and photosensitivity. There are a few exceptions to this rule: it is acceptable to use the nonirritating oils lavender or tea tree undiluted on burns, insect bites, pimples and other skin eruptions-as long as you don’t have extremely sensitive skin.
  • Use with caution those essential oils that result in photosensitivity. Citrus oils can irritate skin, and some of them will cause uneven pigmentation of the skin upon exposure to sun lamps or sunlight.
  • Use with caution those essential oils that are irritating to mucous membrane (the lining of the digestive, respiratory and genito-urinary tracts) and skin. Keep all essential oils away from the eyes.
  • Keep all essential oils out of the reach of young children; older children can be taught to respect and properly use essential oils, but they should nevertheless be supervised. In general, when treating children with essential oils use one-third to one-half the adult dosage and select only nontoxic oils. Among the best and safest essential oils for children are lavender, tangerine, mandarin, neroli, frankincense, petitgrain and Roman chamomile.
  • Vary the essential oils you use. Using the same facial oil blend for a long period of time is acceptable because it covers a very small part of the body, but daily application of the same blend of oils over your entire body for more than two weeks is not recommended. It is wise to alternate with a blend of different oils containing different chemical constituents at least every two weeks. Uninterrupted use of some oils exposes your liver and kidneys to chemical constituents that may be harmful over time. Rotating the oils gives your body time to process them and allows each oil to work on different levels in its own unique way.
  • Be extremely careful before take essential oils orally for therapeutic purposes. Safe ingestion of oils requires a great deal of training and is therefore not recommended for beginners.
  • Use essential oils cautiously with those who are elderly, convalescing, or have serious health problems such as asthma, epilepsy or heart disease.
  • Be cautious about using essential oils during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Even oils that are generally safe during this time may be too stimulating for women who are prone to miscarriage. Because so many oils are best avoided in pregnancy, it is easier to list the safe ones: gentle floral oils such as rose, neroli, lavender, ylang-ylang, chamomile and jasmine absolute, as well as the citruses, geranium, sandalwood, spearmint and frankincense.
  • Overexposure to an essential oil, either through the skin or through inhalation, may result in nausea, headache, skin irritation, emotional unease or a “spaced-out” feeling. Getting some fresh air will help overcome these symptoms. If you ever experience skin irritation or accidentally get essential oils in the eyes, dilute with straight vegetable oil, not water.

The point of this is to stress that essential oils should be respected and use carefully.

WHY DOES THE WAX A CANDLE IS MADE of Matter

What is wax anyway?

Ask the science textbook, and you’ll find that wax is a flammable, carbon-containing solid that becomes liquid when heated above room temperatures; in short, it’s the fuel for the candle flame. As the flame gets hot, molten wax is vaporized and combusted—producing heat and light.

Paraffin is the most commonly used candle wax today. Beeswax, soy wax, palm wax, gels, and synthesized waxes are also used in candle-making for the U.S. market, as are blends of waxes. Waxes burn with a yellow flame due to the presence of carbon.

How do they make candle wax?
For most of recorded history candles were tallow (a by-product of beef-fat rendering) and beeswax until the mid 1800s at which point they were made mainly from spermaceti (spurring larger demand for whale oil), and stearin (initially manufactured from animal fats but now produced almost exclusively from palm waxes).

Virtually any kind of oil can be made into a wax; the question is: what is the best one for making candles?

How did they make candles in the Middle Ages?
Middle Ages. Most early Western cultures relied primarily on candles rendered from animal fat (tallow). A major improvement came in the Middle Ages, when beeswax candles were introduced in Europe. Unlike animal-based tallow, beeswax burned pure and cleanly, without producing a smoky flame.

What about candle waxes?

The earliest wax candles are thought to have been created around 5000 BC by the Egyptians, who dipped papyrus reeds in Beeswax (produced by honey bees). Since then, alongside beeswax, a number of other waxes have come to be popular for candle-making, namely: Paraffin Wax (derived directly from petroleum), Palm Wax (derived from palm oil), Soy Wax (derived from soybean oil).

The main factors that led to the usage of these waxes: ease of production, low costs, pleasant aesthetic, good scent properties, and effective burning.

Why don’t we use one of these waxes?

You’ll notice that sustainability did not feature in that list of key candle-wax properties. When we came to sourcing a wax for our candles, we put sustainability on equal footing with other wax properties, and found a frustrating picture.

Paraffin wax may be very low cost and known for its wonderful burning and scent properties, but as a product of the oil industry it is the very definition of unsustainable(the sludge left in the pipes when they are done making gasoline. Paraffin wax, colourless or white, somewhat translucent, hard wax consisting of a mixture of solid straight-chain hydrocarbons ranging in melting point from about 48° to 66° C (120° to 150° F). Paraffin wax is obtained from petroleum by dewaxing light lubricating oil stocks.

Further recent studies, such as this 2009 study by South Carolina State University, have shown that burning paraffin candles indoors can create unhealthy airborne chemicals. So that’s not going to work for us.

Paraffin-based candles emitted toxic chemicals like toluene and benzene. The soot/fumes are similar to that released from a diesel engine and can be as dangerous as second-hand cigarette smoke. This can contribute to serious respiratory issues like asthma.

Palm Wax was initially heralded as the holy grail of the candle industry. With a pleasant, aesthetic, ‘feathered’ effect, and a similar burn quality as that of paraffin, palm wax was once viewed as the sustainable solution to paraffin use. However, a 2009 investigation by the Economist (“The other oil spill”) discovered that, even with the creation of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), deforestation practices were rampant and endangering many species of animals as demand for palm wax skyrocketed. Even today, it’s considered almost impossible to source truly sustainable palm oil products. This is why I do not use Palm Candle Wax.

Today’s featured oil Arborvitae

Description

Known as the “tree of life,” Arborvitae is majestic in size and abundant in unique benefits. Our arborvitae essential oil is sourced from the heartwood of the Thuja plicata tree. It is also known as Western Red Cedar and is native to North America (primarily Canada and the Northwestern United States). This unique source of arborvitae essential oil contains a distinct chemical profile and is uniquely concentrated in methyl thujate.

Aromatic Description

Woody, warm, earthy

Extraction Method:

Steam Distillation

Plant Part

Wood

Main Constituents

Methyl thujate

Are you looking for a natural but effective household cleaner?

  • Mix with water and another antiseptic oil, if desired, to create a powerful cleaning agent.
  • Diffuse to create an air freshener that can fight airborne bacteria, promoting a clean atmosphere with a bright, fresh scent.
  • Use to clean and polish wood surfaces and floors to clean and preserve the wood, adding a soft luster that can make those surfaces look like new.  Even the hardest, toughest woods will brighten right up.  Mix 4 drops of Arborvitae essential oil and 2 drops of Lemon essential oil with Olive Oil for a natural wood preservative and polish.
  • It can also be a natural way to protect clothes from moths, which are not fond of its scent.   Adding a few drops of the oil to water (not oil, so as not to inadvertently soil the clothing you are trying to protect) and rubbing into wood coat hangers can help keep your clothes in storage moth-free, without the nasty smell of mothballs.

Do you want to restore some luster to your skin?

Topical use: Apply one to two drops to desired area. Dilute with a carrier oil, such as Sweet Almond, Grapeseed  or Coconut Oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.

  • Add to a skin lotion or moisturizer to promote healthy, glowing skin. Apply directly to the skin, or mix with a moisturizer or lotions, to promote healthier, better-looking skin.  This oil penetrates deep into pores and delivering moisture to your skin, and its natural cleaning agents help keep your skin bright and clear.
  • This oil can also be applied to skin blemishes to reduce their appearance and help them clear more quickly.  Its natural cleaning properties reduce the amount of dead skin and other detritus on skin, helping avoid unwanted blemishes, and may even lessen the appearance of scarring.

Are you constantly plagued by mosquitos?

  • Combine with water and spray as an insect repellant.  This can be accomplished by either spraying onto clothing or by making a larger batch and mixing into garden mulch.

Diffusion: Use three to four drops in the diffuser of your choice.

Use during meditation for a sense of peace and calm.

Where can you buy this? From us, Aesthetic Candles.

We offer this in a 5 ml bottle (100 drops) or 1 ml bottle (20 drop)

Arborvitae Essential Oil Safety

Arborvitae essential oil is not recommended for ingestion, as some of its chemical components are toxic to humans.  Excessive inhalation may result in irritation of the lungs or respiratory tract, so users should avoid constantly diffusing over long periods of time.   Arborvitae oil is likely to irritate the skin if applied directly in a high concentration; dilute with a carrier oil or lotion prior to topical use in order to minimize the risk of irritating sensitive skin.  The use of essential oils should not be substituted for any prescribed medication for any medical condition, and should not be used against the advice of a medical practitioner.

WHAT WAX MAKES A BETTER CANDLE

Wax is the largest component of candles, so it’s worth looking into; particularly considering that you burn them in your home.

While paraffin has been the cheap wax of choice for many years, soy wax has recently moved into second place due to its “natural” credentials. However, if you do some research, you’ll discover that there’s a much better choice for candles:

What is wax anyway?

Ask the science textbook, and you’ll find that wax is a flammable, carbon-containing solid that becomes liquid when heated above room temperatures; in short, it’s the fuel for the candle flame. As the flame gets hot, molten wax is vaporized and combusted—producing heat and light.  Paraffin is the most commonly used candle wax today. Beeswax, soy wax, palm wax, gels, and synthesized waxes are also used in candle-making for the U.S. market, as are blends of waxes.

If the definition above sounds broad, that’s because it is. In fact, there are a surprising number of waxes out there.  Virtually any kind of oil can be made into a wax; the question is: what is the best one for making candles?

Paraffin wax may be very low cost and known for its wonderful burning and scent properties, but as a product of the oil industry it is the very definition of unsustainable. Further recent studies, such as this 2009 study by South Carolina State University, have shown that burning paraffin candles indoors can create unhealthy airborne chemicals. So that’s not going to work for us.   Paraffin wax is a petroleum by-product created when crude oil is refined into gasoline. Or as I tell people it is the sludge left in the pipes when they are done making out gasoline. When U.S. researchers burnt a range of candles in a laboratory for a study published two years ago, the chemicals released in harmful amounts included human carcinogens and chemicals known to cause asthma attacks, such as toluene and benzene.

Paraffin-based candles produced ‘clear sharp peaks’ for many chemicals, mainly because they do not reach high enough temperatures when being burned to destroy the hazardous molecules they emit.

‘An occasional paraffin candle and its emissions will probably not affect you,’ he said. ‘But lighting many of them every day for years, or lighting them frequently in an unventilated bathroom, for example, may cause problems.’

“Between 1967 and 2000 the area under cultivation in Indonesia expanded from less than 2,000 square kilometers (770 square miles) to more than 30,000 square kilometers. Deforestation in Indonesia for palm oil and illegal logging is so rapid that a report in 2007 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said most of the country’s forest might be destroyed by 2022.”

The Economist – “The Other Oil Spill”

The majority of that land has been cleared to grow the palm trees from which palm oil and then palm wax is derived. The land being clearcut is home to some of the oldest and most diverse rain forests in the world. The incredible rate of deforestation in Indonesia ranks it as one of the world’s largest CO2 emitters.

Soy Wax is cleaner burning – no toxins, carcinogens or pollutants which means it’s less likely to trigger allergies. no petrol-carbon soot like you get from petroleum-based paraffin candles. longer lasting – soy wax burns cooler which means that you can enjoy your soy wax candle for generally 30-50% longer than a paraffin candle.

Unlike regular paraffin candles, which depend on the availability of oil supplies, soy candles use a resource that is readily renewable. Soybean crops are primarily produced in the states of Iowa, Illinois and Indiana and each year new crops produce soybeans for the manufacture of soy candles. Therefore the production of soy candles support American farmers and help support the national economy.

Economic Benefits

Soy wax candles tend to burn more slowly than regular paraffin candles so you get more value for your money! You might notice that the price of paraffin candles is usually cheaper than soy candles. However, you need to take into account that a soy candle (of the same size) might last up to twice as long as a paraffin candle, so the soy candle actually works out to be more cost effective.

Beeswax comes from the hives of honeybees.  Burn cleaner than others with no sticky, black petroleum based soot.  When burning they emit the scent of warm honey that freshens the air.Nature’s Air Purifier: How Beeswax Candles Clean Air. Pure Beeswax Candles on the other hand burn with almost no smoke or scent and clean the air by releasing negative ions into the air. These negative ions can bind with toxins and help remove them from the air.

Someone asked me to blog about Coconut Wax. What I found excellent color retention and superior scent throw, look no further! Great for a luxury line of candles. With proper wicking, coconut wax may leave a thin layer of wax on the sides of your containers. This is natural. Using a larger wick size will cause the wax to burn too hot and not be as clean burning. I did fined all natural coconut container blend. This wax is predominately coconut blended with vegetable and soy waxes. The price was better. This wax has excellent color retention and jar adhesion. It also has great hot and cold scent throw. I did find a recipe where I could create a Soy Coconut Wax….if there is a demand. this comes down to Pros and Cons Of Using Soy Wax · Candle Additives. This I do not do

Why Switch to Natural Laundry Soap?

Conventional laundry detergent is loaded with chemicals like sulfates, fragrances, phenols and more. Many brands contain things like petroleum distillates, which are linked to cancer and lung disease. Fragrances in these detergents are made of a mix of harmful chemicals.

What we’ve been taught for so long, that we need to use chemicals to effectively clean our clothes, has never been the true or smart . Many natural soaps work as a great & cost effective replacement and will not pollute our bodies & the environment.

The chemical detergents (and all cleaning products) are full of toxin chemicals that quickly wear out your clothes, pollute the land & water sources, harm our animals, cause allergic reactions and damaging to our health. Have you ever wondered if your favorite laundry detergent is making you sick? Here are the 10 common ingredients you will find in any laundry detergent:

  • Phenols: Toxic, a suspected carcinogen and rapidly absorbed. Effects include swelling, pimples, and hives. Internal consumption can cause circulatory collapse, cold sweats, coma, and death.
  • Optical brighteners: These synthetic chemicals convert UV light wavelengths into visible light, which makes laundered clothes appear whiter (although does not actually affect the cleanliness of the clothing). They’ve been found to be toxic to fish and to cause bacterial mutations. Further, they can cause allergic reactions when exposed to skin that is later exposed to sunlight.
  • Linear alkyl sodium sulfonates (LAS): These synthetic surfactants are commonly listed as ‘anionic surfactants’ on labels, and are one of the most common surfactants in use. During their production process, carcinogenic and reproductive toxins such as benzene are released into the environment. They also biodegrade slowly, making them a hazard in the environment.
  • Petroleum distillates (aka napthas): These chemicals have been linked to cancer, lung damage, lung inflammation and damage to mucous membranes.
  • Phosphates: These chemicals are used to remove hard-water minerals to make detergents more effective, and to prevent dirt from settling back onto clothes during a wash. A major problem with them is that, when released into the environment, they stimulate the growth of certain marine plants, which contributes to unbalanced ecosystems. Many states have banned or restricted the use of phosphates for this reason, and you may see laundry detergents advertised as “low-phosphate” or “phosphate-free.”
  • Sodium hypochlorite (household bleach): This is a chemical precursor to chlorine, which is highly toxic and involved in more household poisonings than any other chemical. When it reacts with organic materials in the environment, carcinogenic and toxic compounds are created than can cause reproductive, endocrine and immune system disorders.
  • EDTA: Skin irritant leading to allergies, asthma, and skin rashes. EDTA is a class of compounds used as an alternative to phosphates to reduce mineral hardness in water, prevent bleaching agents from becoming active before they’re put in water and as a foaming stabilizer. EDTA does not biodegrade readily and can re-dissolve toxic heavy metals in the environment, allowing them to re-enter the food chain.
  • Artificial fragrances: Toxic effects on fish and mammals, often causes allergies, skin and eye irritation. Do not easily bio-degrade aind the environment.
  • Ammonia: Can cause burns, cataracts & corneal damage. Long term repeated exposure can cause bronchitis and pneumonia. Also has a toxic effect on plants, animals and fish.
  • Sodium Sulfate: It is corrosive and a severe eye, skin, and respiratory irritant. Can cause asthma attacks.

Aesthetic Candles will be adding a natural laundry detergent to our line. Our price will be $14.00 includes a bottle of essential oil. I am not going to add the essential oil to the batches due to essential oil shelf life. We will be starting with 12 ounce jars – 12 loads

For a stain remover – Lemon Essential Oil

Add it to the load or Apply the Lemon essential oil all over the stain. Immediately throw the item in the washing machine and wash. This does not work like other stain removers. You can use it on old dried out stains and I have done this before but the trick is to apply the Lemon essential oil right before you throw it in the washer.

2nd Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra

sacral

Are you feeling enthusiastic, creative and energetic? Are you happy and living in a healthy relationship? This is what the second chakra is about.

It is located in the sacrum and it relates to the genitals, abdomen, adrenals, lower back and hips. It is sometimes referred to as the sexual energy centre, and it governs creativity, enthusiasm, relationships (especially the sense of attraction between two people) and emotional needs…….and is also about making changes in our lives through personal choices. It brings about a sense of movement.

The element associated with the second chakra is water, and so it is also linked to all our bodily fluids.

A balanced second chakra helps to maintain healthy relationships, healthy emotional needs and an openess to intimacy. and a healthy yin-yang existence. In Sanskrit, sacral chakra literally translates as ‘sweetness’, but it would probably make more sense if we thought of the word ‘pleasure’ instead, as it is partly about how we handle our pleasures and desires.

When this chakra is aligned it promotes energy, success and a positive outlook. it makes it easier for us to be open, imaginative and creative.to go with the flow and to be at home with ourselves. We are able to follow our creative dreams and to learn from all our experiences – positive and negative.

When it is out of balance emotional problems may occur such as sexual guilt and excesses in food, drink or sex. We may become self-centred, distrusting and cold towards others. We may also be over-emotional, obssesive about someone, depressed, have a lack of sexual drive or have an excessive libido.

Physical health problems may include:

Problems with fertility, kidney and bladder infections, impotence, lower back pain, problems with hips, chronic fatigue.

Emotional health problems may include:

Neediness, hyper-sensitivity, shyness, lack of confidence, a tendency to worry.

The best essential oils to use with the sacral chakra are uplifting, calming, aphrodisiac and those that balance the female/male energies.

Here are some good oils to help balance the svadisthana:

  • Jasmine, patchouli, bergamot and sandalwood – help balance your yin-yang energies.
  • Rosemary – good for focus, depression, fatigue and memory.
  • Clary sage, fennel, geranium, jasmine, neroli, rose and ylang-ylang – help with menstrual problems.
  • Jasmine, neroli, rose otto, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, black pepper, patchouli and marjoram – aphrodisiac oils, so helpful for lack of sexual drive.
  • Basil, chamomile, eucalyptus, clary sage, juniper and rosemary – these essential oils are anti-inflammatory or antispasmodic and so can help with backache and sciatica.

Remember, Lavender is useful for all seven main chakras.

Water is the element associated with this chakra, so using some drops of essential oils in your bath is particularly effective!
